  •   Preventing deterioration of property value
  •   Peace of mind
  •   It is much less expensive to finish off your basement than it is to add an addition to your home

What are some signs I should look for?
Besides the obvious of a pool of water on your floor or water trickling down your wall there are a number of ways water damage can show up.
  •   Mold and / or mildew
  •   Musty odors
  •   Damp spots on walls
  •   White chalky substance on walls
  •   Cracked walls
  •   Cracks in the floor
  •   Peeling paint
  •   Rust on appliances or furniture
  •   Dry rot
  •   Warped paneling
What are some ways water can enter into the basement?
  •   Mortar joint
  •   Floor cracks
  •   Wall cracks
  •   Pipe penetrations
  •   Tie rods
  •   Top of foundation
  •   Cove joint
  •   Window wells
What are some things that may contribute to my problems?
  •   Living in a low level area
  •   Neighboring yards sloping towards yours
  •   Shifting or settling of your home
  •   Poured concrete walls when the mixture has not been mixed properly or after time it may have had a chemical breakdown.
  •   A neighbor added an addition or installed a swimming pool.
  •   The previously installed drainage was not pitched correctly.
Is there anything I can do to help prevent water entering my basement?
  •   Slope the ground away from the outside of your foundation.
  •   Install gutters and downspouts keeping them clean of debris.
  •   Have roof water piped underground to carry water fifteen feet or more away from house.
  •   Remove shrubbery or keep it trimmed to allow the soil to get more sunlight
  •   Put coverings over your window wells.
What is a French Drain system?
  •   This is a system installed to relieve the upward hydrostatic pressure by collecting the water and directing it into a sump pump. To install this, a trench is dug around the perimeter of the basement floor. Then a perforated pipe, which leads to a sump pump, is embedded in crushed washed stone and then resurfaced.
What is a sump pump?
  •   This is an electric device that is installed at the bottom of a sump basin, pit, below the floor. Its purpose is to pump rainwater that has accumulated around the exterior of the foundation to a suitable discharge location. It can also be used to pump grey water from the washing machine or laundry sink.
What is a battery back up?
  •   This is used as an emergency back up system to support your regular sump pump. It will automatically begin pumping should your regular sump pump loose power or fail.
What is an Exterior Gravity system?
  •   This is a system that is used for the same reason a French Drain is used for, except it is done on the exterior of the foundation. To install this, excavating is done around the area that is causing the problem. A perforated pipe is laid at the bottom of the house foundation, turning into a solid pipe that is directed towards the lowest point of the property.
What is a weep zone?
  •   This is simply a half-inch gap left between the basement floor and the basement wall when putting in a French Drain. This is usually used in fieldstone or block foundations that doesn't have an installation of a wall covering.
